About the EAA

The EAA stands for Experimental Aircraft Association. EAA was started in the early 1950’s by a group of aviation enthusiasts dedicated to furthering the development of general aviation. This group was convinced that they could design and build aircraft just as safe as the certified manufacturers and went about proving this to the government. It was finally decided that these persons could design and build their own aircraft providing they did at least 51% of the work involved and it was done for educational and recreational purposes. This concept formed the backbone of the EAA organization but it has evolved into much more. EAA has embraced all things aviation and is committed to research, development, safety, education, and the preservation of our aviation history. If you are interested in finding out more about the EAA please visit their website at www.eaa.org.

EAA Chapter 251 was started in Alamogordo, NM back in the 1960’s by a group of aviation enthusiasts. Most were pilots and more than half had built or were building their own aircraft. The focus remains much the same in today’s members. Most of us are pilots, some high time military and commercial and some just getting started, and most of us have built or are building our own aircraft. However, this is not a requirement. Some of our members just enjoy airplanes and all that goes with them and they usually find themselves being invited to go flying or lend a hand with an aircraft project. We have a great bunch of people with all kinds of flying and building experience and are always ready to welcome new faces to our chapter.
